The El Sistema Global Movement

El Sistema is an organisation of networked music schools and performing groups in Venezuela. It was founded in 1975 by Jose Antonio Abreu who had a vision for seeing youth empowered through learning and performing classical music. There are now over 100 youth orchestras, choirs and other ensembles throughout the country. http://www.fesnojiv.gob.ve/en.html, http://fundamusical.org.ve/

El Sistema has been given considerable media coverage in the United States and Europe in recent years, partly owing to the appointment of a Sistema graduate, Gustavo Dudamel, to the position of director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra.

There have been considerable efforts to establish Sistema-inspired programs in North America and Europe. This has inspired an El Sistema global movement which is gaining momentum at a rapid rate and seeing many new programs created. I am very interested to see how different countries have interpreted El Sistema for their own El Sistema-inspired music programs, and how sympathetic the programs are to their own culture and communities.
